About

Biography

Miray Wassouf is a Syrian visual artist who specializes in painting and mixed media, based in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. She is a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Latakia. Wassouf explores the complexities of human relationships through visual art. Since graduating in 2016, her practice has evolved into an ongoing visual diary that weaves together personal observation, memory, imagination, and documented reality.

Drawing on influences ranging from medieval and Renaissance religious art to mythology, music, and art history, Wassouf reimagines familiar narratives through a contemporary lens and approaches religious imagery not as an expression of faith, but as a visual language through which to examine intimacy, power, vulnerability, desire, and the shifting dynamics between people.

At the heart of the practice is a poetic interest in existentialism and the contradictions of being human—the longing for meaning in an indifferent world, the tension between hope and disillusionment, and the absurdity of our attempts to love, believe, control, and belong. Balancing cynicism with romance and fragility, her work investigates the intersections of pain and pleasure, authority and submission, comedy and tragedy. Through these deeply personal yet universal narratives, Wassouf invites viewers to reflect on the emotional and philosophical complexities of the human condition.
